A Guide To Framing

Posted on Friday 20th April 2018   |   How To

Frames are the four walls around lasting memories or masterpieces that not only protect them but also significantly enhance their presentation. Yet, a lot of people tend to not focus as much on the framing and the impact a perfect framing finish has on the overall piece.

The aesthetic purpose of a frame

While picking out a frame, it is important to remember the purpose of a frame, which is to enhance the picture it is for. Do not just pick a frame just because it is visually pleasing on its own, choose a frame that will highlight the key features of the picture. The frame should not only reinforce the style but also provide a finishing touch to the picture.

It is not just a picture frame

While the frame is not supposed to be the focal point or the centre of attention, it is still important to remember that the frame can accentuate certain aspects of the picture and is supposed to complement it. For instance, a modern-esque picture with a traditional-looking frame is prone to look odd.

Match or Clash

Apart from the style, another thing you should keep in mind while choosing a frame is the colour. Observe the piece and determine if there is a colour scheme; if there is, then you need to decide whether you want it to emphasize it with a contrasting coloured frame, or if you want the frame to match the colour scheme in the picture. You can also match the colour of the frame to the colour of your wall if you want to make it less prominent.

The protective purpose of a frame

Framing is not just ornamental; it is also a protective shell for pictures. A picture frame serves the purpose of preventing damage to a piece of work by shielding it from dust, dirt and scratches.

It is essential to keep in mind while framing that is not just about enhancing the beauty of a piece but also protecting it.

Picture Mounting

Mounts are perfect for pieces of art that you value a lot. They separate the frame from the picture which provides extra protection to the work from condensation and dust as well as preventing the frame from rubbing on the piece of art.

Nowadays, there are a variety of picture mounts available with varying levels of protection. The highest level of protection is offered by Museum mounts. Along with a standard gap between the art and the frame, these mounts also consist of lignin-free cotton fibre and have a non-acidic surface making them ideal for the pieces of art that are the most precious to you.

Plexiglas VS. Glass

The purpose of the front covering is to protect the picture from any pollution, moisture or air which can significantly reduce the work’s lifespan. Both Glass and acrylic/Plexiglas provide some protection from UV rays preventing works of art from getting deteriorated.

When it comes to framing, it is always beneficial to take advantage of the variety of styles and customizations available to find a finish that is just perfect for your picture.
